The first edition of the Global Index on Responsible AI (GIRAI) has been released today. It is the largest global data collection on responsible AI covering 138 countries. The report presents a comprehensive evaluation of the current state of responsible AI practices across the world. What is worrisome is that the evaluation reinforces the gap between the rapid pace of AI development and adoption outstripping the much slower progress in implementing responsible AI. It underscores the importance of international cooperation between governments, the active role of non-state actors, and the necessity for inclusive and equitable AI systems. The findings call for urgent actions to bridge these gaps and promote the ethical development and deployment of AI.

The top 10 takeaways in the report are -

  1. AI governance does not translate into responsible AI

  2. Mechanisms ensuring the protection of human rights in the context of AI are limited

  3. International cooperation is an important cornerstone of current responsible AI practices

  4. Gender equality remains a critical gap in efforts to advance responsible AI

  5. Key issues of inclusion and equality in AI are not being addressed

  6. Workers in AI economies are not adequately protected

  7. Responsible AI must incorporate cultural and linguistic diversity

  8. There are major gaps in ensuring the safety, security and reliability of AI systems

  9. Universities and civil society are playing crucial roles in advancing responsible AI

  10. There is still a long way to achieve adequate levels of responsible AI worldwide
